The classroom setting invariably involves students with diversified characteristics, needs, interests, capabilities, and background knowledge. Even the modalities through which they acquire and process information, their behavior and interaction / communications vary from student to student. The gaps between and among the learners continue to widen as the differences continue to be unattended. Such situations paved the way for the conception of the Special Education Services of Amazing Grace School, a Christian school which is dedicated to the unfolding of well-rounded individuals.
The Program specifically gives educational and behavioral assistance and accommodations to a) children with mild Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder ADHD), Attention Deficit Disorder ( ADD ) , autism, learning problems and mild mental retardation, Special Class, Integration, Mainstreaming and Inclusion Schemes.
THE PHILOSOPHY of AGS
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and knowledge of the Holy One leads to understanding.“
- Proverbs 9:10
We believe that all truth originates from God. He is infinitely wiser than all educators that have ever lived and he desires to communicate with His children through each learning experience.
Thus, we take it upon ourselves to provide a venue where children learn Christian values while preparing them for productive and worthy membership to society and service to God through others.
AGS community also believes that all children are capable of learning within their capabilities at their own rate and speed without losing the elements of acceptance of one’s worth and the challenge for productive growth. The community further believes in providing children with special needs of an education commensurate to their abilities, characteristics, interests, and needs, to assist them in developing and maximizing their God-given potentials; to provide them opportunities to learn independence and generate responsible thought and actions into becoming well-adjusted and concerned individuals.
Amazing Grace School is a God-fearing, spirit-filled community, of academically and morally equipped students, competently effective personnel serving God and nation.
Equip AGS students with quality education that will help them become persons of integrity pleasing to God and man.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
AGS believes that learners are precious and potential natural resources who can be Christian citizens and co-builders of the future. They have untapped natural, unique and innate multi-faceted intelligences which need to be discovered and developed.
AGS further believes in the moral and spiritual development of the learners. Together with their honed leadership skills and pro-social behavior, they can be reliable decision makers and productive contributors of the society.
Specifically, and as embodied by the national goals and the philosophy and vision of AGS, the school academic community endeavors to develop these competences among the pupils:
Mastery of communication skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing required for each level
Rational thinking: being able to express one’s thoughts clearly and listen with understanding.
Utilization of multiple intelligences to become lifelong learners
Manifestation of the core values
Appreciation of literature, art, music, nature,
Patriotism and love of country
AGS, therefore, puts emphasis on the children as future adults, and in the early recognition of their innate qualities and aptitudes.
AGS integrates values and virtues for moral development that reinforce responsibility and social concern. These values are the identifiable characteristics or mark which distinguish an AGS pupil from the rest and which the school develops in the learners as early as pre-school years.
Love of God and spiritual dynamism
Commitment and responsibility
Humility and respect
Academic excellence and discipline
All collaborative efforts are exerted towards the attainment of these core values.
AGS SPECIAL EDUCATION (SPED) PROGRAM
The diagram below illustrates the design of the program. The Special Education Program has two main services: one for students with high academic/mental ability and the specific area needs services. Students are grouped into the Learning in Strides group (which further divides into the academic stream and pre-vocational stream) and the Jabez Individual Instructions group.
Early Intervention Program (IEP) – for children who are newly diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and other related disorders and who have not acquired educational intervention yet. The program includes the development of communication, social, behavioral and sensory motor skills.
Pre-Primary Program (PPP) – for children that have already undergone the EIP. The program includes pre-academic knowledge, social skills and self-help care.
Primary Program (PP) – for children that have passed the EIP and PPP programs. The program focuses on higher degree of cognitive skills and more independent self-help skills, motor skills, and social interaction. Integration may be adopted as preparatory to mainstreaming.
Transition Program with (Pre-Vocational Skills)
B. INTEGRATION – Placement in the regular class in one or more subjects to provide interaction with regular children but the special class remains as his station.
A. Partial – Placement in the regular class to provide interaction with pull-out provision for one on one instruction. The regular class is the child’s station.
B. Full – Placement in the regular class after fulfilling specific academic requirements. No pull-out. The regular class remains his station. Individualization may be outside the class/school.
D. SEL-CONTAINED SPECIAL CLASS
A. For pupils with mental retardation and/or other related disorders having the same mental/academic level. The class is handled by a special education teacher who may follow the class as level progresses and/or recommend pupils to partial mainstreaming or full mainstreaming.
